Red Cross's "Safe and Well" Website
When disaster strikes, will your friends or family know how to reach you to know you are safe and well? Will you know how to find out about your loved one?
One of the frustrations during a disaster situation is not knowing how your loved one who was in the area is fairing. Or if you were the one in the disaster zone you may feel frustrated that you can't inform your loved ones of your whereabouts and condition. The Safe and Well website Red Cross has developed will help reduce the frustration and lack of communication everyone experiences during a disaster.
Instead of overwhelming phone lines get online. Red Cross has established a website -- https://disastersafe.redcross.org/ -- for tracking registered users' well being. You can search their list to find out about your loved one. A successful search lists the person's first and last names, the last date of contact (as-of date), and whatever message the person has selected to appear on a search result.
You can also access the website from Red Cross's main website http://www.redcross.org. The "Safe and Well" website works internationally, not just across the U.S. No matter where the disaster is, or what it is, Red Cross is doing what they can to help connect loved ones after a disaster.
By going to the Red Cross site you can also check how responses are going to various disasters and situations, how to get prepared for a disaster, or even how to donate or volunteer. You can even shop at the Red Cross store for first aid supplies, emergency preparedness kits, and training. This is a good site to have bookmarked as part of your disaster preparedness plan.
In the meantime, be safe and well, and keep in touch with your loved ones.
